The Friday shutdown: a 15-minute checklist for real rest

By Dr. Jorge ParrottOctober 22, 2026 3 min read

"Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." (Mark 6:31, NKJV)

Jesus said that to men who were busy doing good. Mark tells us why: "For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat."

Sound familiar, beloved?

Many leaders take a day off and spend it rehearsing Monday in their heads. The body is home. The mind is still at work.

Rest begins before the rest day. It begins with a shutdown.

The prompt

This is Prompt 96, "Rest-Day Shutdown," from the Kingdom-Minded AI Prompt Library:

Act as a skilled, ethical assistant. Create a rest-day preparation checklist: work shutdown, inbox capture, next-week parking lot, household preparation, family communication and release of false responsibility. If facts are missing, ask or mark them clearly rather than inventing them.

Build your checklist once (today, 15 minutes)

Run the prompt with a few honest details about your life. For example: "I run a small business from home, I have two teenagers, and my rest day is Saturday." Or: "I'm a pastor. Sunday is my work day and Monday is my Sabbath."

Edit what comes back until it fits your life. Then save it where you'll see it at the end of the week, on your phone or on a printed card at your desk.

You build it once. You use it every week.

The six parts

  1. Work shutdown. Write one sentence on where each open project stands. Monday-you will thank Friday-you.

  2. Inbox capture. Every unanswered message gets a decision: reply now, schedule for Monday or let it go.

  3. Next-week parking lot. One page for every idea that would chase you through the weekend. Write it down and leave it there.

  4. Household preparation. Groceries, errands, the car. Rest is hard when the refrigerator is empty.

  5. Family communication. Tell people when you're offline. "I'm off from Friday at 5 until Monday at 8. For a true emergency, call."

  6. Release of false responsibility. This is the line that sets you free.

Release of false responsibility

Some of what you carry was never yours to carry. Outcomes belong to God. Other people's choices belong to them.

"It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep." (Psalm 127:2, NKJV)

Write down what you're carrying into the weekend. Then hand it over in prayer, one item at a time. Say it out loud if it helps: "Lord, this is Yours until Monday."

Guard the boundary

If your phone keeps pulling you back, pair this with Prompt 99, "Digital Boundaries."

Turn off work notifications on your rest day. Move email off your home screen. Small fences protect big things.

Your next step

Tomorrow, 15 minutes before you close the week, walk through your checklist. Then stop, and rest.

Pray this as you do: "Father, I've done what was mine to do this week. I give You the rest. Teach me to rest as one You love."
